Cheat sheet: The six parts of a mini-grid

(i) Power generation system: This can be renewable (solar, wind, hydro) or nonrenewable (diesel generators).

(ii) Energy storage system: Batteries or other forms of storage for periods of high demand (televised sport) or low supply (night-time).

(iii) Power conditioning unit: Inverters and rectifiers to convert electricity between DC and AC, regulate voltage and ensure consistent supply.

(iv) Distribution network: Cables and poles to deliver electricity from the generation system to end users.

(v) Control, load and monitoring system: The brain that oversees distribution and performance, and potentially feeding into a national grid.

(vi) User interface: Gadgets for metering and payment, often via mobile platforms in rural areas.
