How climate change is upending corporate Africa

The green economy is more than cleantech. All sectors on the continent are being disrupted

Welcome to Green Rising – When we launched in August 2023, we declared: “Our mission is to help professionals in Africa’s green economy figure out the way forward.”

Since then, we have grown by leaps and bounds. And the green economy even more so.

Some ask – is the green economy distinct, is it separate from African business life?

No, we don’t think so. All parts of the continent’s economy have developed green tints during 2024. How… where?

We offer insights and ideas that document and drive a sustainable yet prosperous Africa, leaning on data and concise presentation.

We have circled back to a dozen stories that represent the breadth of what is happening in Africa’s green economy.

  • Here are analytical business memos looking at corporate solutions to the climate crisis on the continent.

The fixes: We don't dwell on the problems. We all -- as professionals -- know what they are.

  • What we really need, personally and collectively, are more and better fixes.

  • Green Rising showcases overlooked opportunities, points out new thinking, takes experts outside silos, spots trends and above all unearths solutions.

Our role: Africa’s green economy is growing fast. Yet it is highly fragmented and has few places where interested parties can find common ground. Do you know someone else who should join this conversation? Please invite them to see the below…

Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) is much overlooked but taking on mighty king cash and winning for the green economy across the continent

4. What we’re reading

  • Africa’s next car supplier: More than half the electric cars worldwide are now found in China, along with 68% of the production of EV batteries. China produced 30 million vehicles last year, nearly one-third of global vehicle production of all types, and more than the EU and the US combined. (IOL)

  • Grass is better than trees: A recent study highlights the significant role of African grasslands. These ecosystems can sequester substantial amounts of carbon dioxide. Research indicates that well-managed grasslands can store up to 1.4 billion metric tons of carbon annually, equivalent to the emissions produced by more than 300 million cars. The study also stresses the threats posed by land use changes, such as conversion to agriculture and urban development, which diminish grasslands' climate-fighting capabilities. (Conservation International)

  • Seeds of Resilience: The need for gene banks to support climate-resilient crops has become increasingly urgent as global food security is threatened by climate change. A recent report shows how preserving crop diversity in gene banks can enhance the resilience of food systems by providing essential genetic resources for breeding programs. This approach aims to safeguard against biodiversity loss and enable the development of crops that can withstand extreme weather conditions. (Eurasia Review)
